Marbella Marina Set for Major Revamp

Puerto Banus, Marbella’s iconic port, could be left in the dark as sister harbour, La Bajadilla Marina, gets set to shine with a £350 million investment.

Renowned for its jaw-dropping yachts and famous as a royalty and celebrity hangout, Porto Banus is one of the most iconic ports in southern Spain. Just down the road is La Bajadilla Marina, a quieter port which could soon be drawing in the bigger crowds after plans for a £350 million investment, including a cruise ship terminal, were approved.

In a bid to attract a new form of tourism to Marbella’s shores, the large investment has been made by Malaga Football Club owner  Qatari Sheikh Abdullah Ben Nasser Al-Thani.

The plans for the new port include a 200m quay for cruise liners and a five-star hotel on the marina, as well as new bars, restaurants, shops and supermarkets to revamp the eastern area of the city.

The extended pier will not only be able berth cruise liners, but an exclusive pier inside the marina is to be set aside for 26 boats, with a further 541 berths for private craft. La Bajadilla’s capacity will increase from its current 262 quota to over 800 boats.

The eastern coastline on the outskirts of Marbella has been an industrial state for decades. This will be redone to create an area of more urban development including green space. Hopes are that the area will be linked to the rest of Spain though high speeds trains in future.

The project is being referred to as the most important urban development in Marbella’s history. Once complete, La Bajadilla will be in line with famous Puerto Banus in the west.
